LED downlights in Malaysia — sizing, colour temperature and what to actually buy

Downlights are the workhorse of every Malaysian home. They sit flush in the plaster ceiling, throw light exactly where you want it, and disappear when they're off. But once you start shopping you'll see 3-inch, 4-inch, 5-inch, 6-inch, three different colour temperatures, CRI 80 vs 90+, dimmable vs non-dim — and prices that range from RM12 to over RM200 per fitting. This guide walks you through what each spec actually means for a Klang Valley home.

Recessed vs surface mount, and the sizes that matter

Recessed downlights drop into a cut-out in your plaster ceiling — clean, flush, the standard look for new builds and renovations in KL and PJ. Surface-mount downlights bolt directly onto a concrete slab or existing ceiling where there's no plenum space above, which is common in older terrace houses, balconies and bomb-shelter store rooms.

The four common sizes on the market are 3" (around 90mm cut-out), 4" (~110mm), 5" (~140mm) and 6" (~165mm). As a rule of thumb: 3" and 4" suit corridors, bathrooms and accent rows; 5" is the all-rounder for living rooms and bedrooms in a typical 2.7m–3m ceiling; 6" is for bigger spaces or where you want fewer fittings doing more work. Always check the manufacturer's cut-out dimension — they vary by a few millimetres between brands and your renovator needs the exact number before he picks up the hole-saw.

What we stock

We carry Philips and Osram for buyers who want a well-known international name and long warranty terms; Opple and FSL for excellent mid-range value (these are what most of our renovation-package customers go for); and BSlight for budget-friendly bulk jobs where you need fifty downlights for a whole double-storey terrace without blowing the lighting budget. We also stock anti-glare deep-recess versions, gimbal/tiltable downlights for accent work, and IP44-rated units for wet zones. If you have a specific brand-and-model spec from your ID, WhatsApp us a photo and we'll quote it.

Colour temperature, CRI and dimming — choose this once, live with it for years

Colour temperature is the single biggest decision. 3000K (warm white) is yellow-toned and cosy — best for bedrooms, dining areas and feature ceilings. 4000K (natural white) is neutral and clean — our most popular choice for living rooms, kitchens and open-plan ground floors. 6000K(cool daylight) is crisp and slightly blue — great for kitchens, bathrooms, study rooms, offices and shoplots. Many of our downlights are now tri-colour switchable (3000K/4000K/6000K toggle on the driver), which is a smart hedge if you're unsure.

CRI (colour rendering index) measures how accurately the light shows true colours. CRI 80 is fine for general lighting. CRI 90+ is worth the extra ringgit in kitchens, dressing areas, bathrooms with makeup mirrors, and anywhere you display art or food — skin tones and timber grain look noticeably better.

Drivers matter too. Cheap downlights use built-in drivers that fail before the LED chip does; better fittings use external drivers you can replace without pulling the whole unit out. If you want to dim, you must buy a dimmable LED downlight AND a compatible LED dimmer switch — standard old-school dimmers will flicker or buzz.

How many downlights per room

A rough Malaysian rule of thumb: take the room area in square metres, multiply by 1 if your ceiling is around 2.7m, by 1.2 if it's 3m+, and that's roughly the number of 5-inch downlights you need at 9W–12W each. A 4m x 4m living room (16 sqm) at standard ceiling height wants around 16 downlights spaced evenly — but in practice we'd plan 12 downlights plus a feature pendant or chandelier over the coffee table. For bathrooms, IP44-rated downlights are non-negotiable above the shower zone. For kitchens, consider pairing recessed downlights with magnetic track lights over the island.
