1. Insist on seeing lights running

A catalog cannot show you the difference between 3000K and 4000K in a real room, how a magnetic track head renders skin tones, or how loud a fan is on speed 5. Shops that display products switched on are spending money to let you judge quality — that confidence usually extends to what they sell.

2. Check for SIRIM certification

Lighting sold in Malaysia should meet SIRIM / ST COA standards. Grey imports are cheaper but risk flicker, early failure and complications with insurance in the worst case. Ask directly: "Is this SIRIM-certified?" A good shop answers without hesitation.

3. Ask what happens after the sale

The real test of a lighting shop is a warranty claim in year two. Ask: who handles the claim — you or the shop? Do they keep purchase records so you do not need the receipt? Can they supply a matching unit years later when you extend the renovation?

4. Compare total cost, not item price

A downlight that is RM5 cheaper but fails in 18 months is not cheaper. Factor in warranty length, driver quality, delivery charges and whether the shop offers project pricing when you buy the whole house in one order.
