AlphaFan vs Acorn vs Vannus — Malaysian DC ceiling fans compared

Walk into our Bandar Sri Damansara showroom on a Saturday and you'll hear the same three names come up over and over: AlphaFan, Acorn, Vannus. All three are DC-motor ceiling fans, all three are well stocked across KL and Selangor, and all three look fantastic in a glossy product photo. But they are not the same fan, and they are not aimed at the same buyer.

We sell all three. We install all three. We also get the after-sales calls. So here is the honest version — what each brand actually does well, where it falls short, and which one we'd put in your living room if you asked us across the counter.

At a glance

For this comparison we picked one representative 56" DC model from each brand, since that's the size most Malaysian living rooms and master bedrooms end up needing. Not sure what size you need? See our ceiling fan sizing guide.

Motor and energy use

All three are real DC fans — not AC fans dressed up as DC. You'll see roughly 28-32W at top speed across the three, versus around 65-75W for a comparable AC ceiling fan. Over a year of nightly use in a Malaysian bedroom, the DC saving is real (we usually quote customers around RM60-RM90 a year per fan, depending on TNB tariff block).

Where they differ is the motor itself. Vannus uses a slightly higher-grade brushless motor with better low-RPM torque, which is why it feels smoother on speed 1 — that lazy, barely-moving fan that you actually want when you've already got the aircon on. AlphaFan and Acorn are close to each other on low-speed feel; Acorn's lowest speed is a touch more "pulsy" on some units.

Top-end airflow is roughly equivalent across all three at 56". For a 12x14 ft bedroom you will not feel a meaningful difference at speed 6.

Blades, build and finish

This is where Vannus pulls away. The Aria-X ships with proper solid wood blade options (walnut, oak veneer over MDF on the cheaper SKUs, full solid wood on the premium SKUs) and the housing has a much heavier feel — die-cast aluminium versus the plastic-shroud-over-metal you get on the entry AlphaFan and Acorn models.

AlphaFan sits in the middle. ABS blades, but the moulding is clean, the paint finish is even, and the canopy doesn't rattle. Acorn is the most honest of the three about being a value product — the ABS is a bit lighter, the chrome accents are plated plastic rather than real metal, and on the white finishes the canopy can yellow after a few years in a kitchen-adjacent installation. Not a deal-breaker for the price, but worth knowing.

Remote, smart features and light kits

If you want to control the fan from your phone or wire it into Google Home, Vannus is the only one of the three with a native Tuya/Smart Life integration out of the box. AlphaFan has a WiFi module as a paid add-on on selected models. Acorn is RF-remote only on most SKUs.

Light kits are the other split:

For a bedroom where the fan is also the main light, the Vannus integrated approach is genuinely nicer to live with.

Warranty terms read similar on paper but the real-world story is: PCBs are the part that fails, not motors. A DC motor almost never burns out within the warranty window. The receiver board does. So the PCB warranty matters more than the headline motor number. On that front all three are roughly even.

Vannus has the best after-sales response time in our experience — they courier replacement PCBs to the showroom within a week. AlphaFan is close behind. Acorn is fine but you may wait 2-3 weeks for a board.

Common Malaysian use cases

Double-volume living room (high ceiling, 16-18 ft):You want airflow and presence. Vannus 60" or AlphaFan 60" with a drop rod. Acorn's lighter build looks under-spec'd in a tall space.

Master bedroom over the bed (8-10 ft ceiling): Any of the three works. Pick on budget and looks.

Kid's bedroom or guest room:Acorn 46-52". Honestly the best value-per-ringgit fan we sell, and the kids won't care about real wood blades.

Bedroom with no separate ceiling light: Vannus with integrated LED. Saves you a second fixture and the dimmable tri-tone is genuinely useful for night-feeding parents.

Open kitchen / dining (humid, greasy air): Stick to ABS blades, not wood. AlphaFan or the ABS-blade Vannus SKU. Wipe-down survives years.

Which one we'd recommend for...

Budget-conscious buyers— Acorn. Around RM500-RM700 gets you a real DC fan that will run quietly for years. You're giving up some finish quality and the fanciest features, not the core fan.

Design-conscious buyers— Vannus. The solid wood blade SKUs and the integrated LED housing look like furniture, not appliances. If your interior designer specified "no visible fan light kit," this is the one.

Smart-home households — Vannus, by a mile. Native Tuya, works with Google Home and Alexa without a hub, and the app actually works.

Large rooms or high ceilings— AlphaFan 60" or Vannus 60". Both have the motor torque to move air at full reach. Acorn does make a 60" but we'd push you up to the AlphaFan for a hall-sized space.

Resale-minded property owners (rental units, AirBnB):AlphaFan. Mid-priced, looks premium, and the warranty is long enough that you're not getting service calls during the rental.

See and compare in person

Specs on a page only tell you so much. The difference between Acorn's low-speed hum and Vannus's whisper is something you have to stand under to hear. Our showroom at No. 7, 8 & 9, Jalan Emas SD 5/1B, Bandar Sri Damansara has working displays of all three brands at multiple blade spans — come run them side by side, feel the airflow, and we'll talk through which one fits your ceiling height, your aircon setup and your budget.

Or WhatsApp us at +60 11-5696 8200 with a photo of your room and rough measurements, and we'll send back a shortlist before you make the drive.
